From Embryonic Development to Future Organ Models

The SUMO project develops advanced laboratory models that mimic early human development and organ formation, with the long-term goal of reducing the need for animal testing.

We have made significant progress in developing mouse and human gastruloids, with reproducible early heart and gut development. We are also developing methods to provide these models with blood vessels, enabling them to grow into larger and more complex tissues.

New live-imaging, Raman spectroscopy and AI-based tracking technologies are being developed to monitor and analyse gastruloid development. These tools will support automated optimisation and future applications such as environmental toxicity testing.

Alongside the scientific work, SUMO is developing ethical and regulatory frameworks, engaging with scientists, industry and the public, and translating project technologies towards real-world applications through initiatives such as MicroOrganoTech AS.
